TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY

Traumatic brain injury (TBI), also known as intracranial injury, occurs when an external force injures the brain.

TBI can be classified based on severity, mechanism (closed or penetrating head injury), or other features (e.g., occurring in a specific location or over a widespread area).

Shunts

The surgical insertion of a drainage system, called a shunt, is used when the TBI causes a blockage in the flow of the CSF in order to allow the flow to take place.
It consists of a long, flexible tube with a valve that keeps fluid from the brain flowing in the right direction and at the proper rate.

Hydrocephalus

What Is Hydrocephalus?

Hydrocephalus is a condition that occurs when fluid builds up in the skull and causes the brain to swell. The name means “water on the brain.” Brain damage can occur as a result. Hydrocephalus mainly occurs in children and adults over 60.

The most common treatment for hydrocephalus is the surgical insertion of a drainage system, called a shunt. It consists of a long, flexible tube with a valve that keeps fluid from the brain flowing in the right direction and at the proper rate.

If a shunt is not used, another option is to use an endoscope with a surgical balloon.

CUSA

(Cavitron ultrasonic surgical aspirator)

A machine used for the removal of tumours from the brain withoutdamaging healthy brain tissue.

Ultrasonic Aspiration

In the last 10 years surgical ultrasonic aspiration has become established as a modern neurosurgical technique.

The successful use of the ultrasonic aspirator system has suggested that this technique might be applicable for nontraumatic, radical, and time-saving resection of intraspinal and intracranial tumours.

Using the Cavitron ultrasonic surgical aspirator (CUSA) the tumour can be removed by fragmentation, irrigation, and aspiration. Neuro Critical Care

The monitoring of intracranial pressure is used in treating severe traumatic brain injury patients. This process is called intracranial pressure monitoring. All current clinical available measurement methods are invasive and use various transducer systems (most used is insertion of a catheter into the cranium).

ICP Monitoring – INTRAVENTRICULAR CATHETER. The intraventricular catheter is the most accurate monitoring method. To insert an intraventricular catheter, a hole is drilled through the skull. The catheter is inserted through the brain into the lateral ventricle.

External Ventricular Drainage Systems are intended to allow drainage and monitoring of Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) from the lateral ventricles of the brain and the lumbar subarachnoid space in selected patients to reduce intracranial pressure (ICP), to monitor intracranial pressure (ICP), to monitor cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and to provide temporary drainage of CSF.

Cranial Access

Craniotomy
Craniotomy is a cut that opens the cranium (Skull). During this procedure, a section of the skull, called a bone flap, is removed to access the brain underneath. The bone flap is replaced after the procedure with plates and screws.
